Page 1 of 2 Buoyancy World-Koh Tao Island Wide Project 2009 In addition to all of the monthly projects occurring through the Save Koh Tao Marine Branch, each year we conduct a large scale project to bring the community together and raise awareness. Last year we worked with local dive schools and businesses to build the Gulf of Thailand's largest Biorock(tm) structure, 'Hin Fai.' This year we are proposing to construct an an artificial reef and SCUBA diver training ground called 'Buoyancy World.' some of the features of this site will include:
- Training Aids
- Swim-throughs or caves
- Rings, hoops, and other obstacles
- Balance beams
- Hover weights
- Permanent CESA Lines
- Navigation check points
- Search and recovery objects
- Ecological Monitoring Program/Reef Check Belt Transects
- Coral Nursery Platforms/anchoring points
- Art & Sculptures
- Fish Nurseries/aggregates
- Diverse habitats for Marine Organisms
Through this project we hope to construct a new dive site which is specially designed to function as a buoyancy training site and coral/fish nursery. By increasing beginner diver’s buoyancy skills with obstacles not found naturally on a reef we hope to reduce incidences of personal injury and protect natural reef areas from damage.
By also acting as a coral/fish nursery the project will help to restore and improve the abundance and biodiversity of Koh Tao’s reefs and help to offset local human impacts. Additionally, this project will further increase awareness and community involvement in environmental conservation projects. The theme of the site is still undecided, but will be based on traditional Thai Values and Traditions, both to provide an attractive site and to increase the amount of long-term community involvement.
The project proposal is available on the here for download, and we will be starting the planning and fundraising activities soon. You can get involved with this exciting project by signing up through at the meeting or contacting
